Presidential Facebooks

George W. Bush still has a fully functional Facebook page with 736,290 followers...not to shabby right? wrong. Barack Obama has a whopping 18,351,991 and the first lady not too far behind with 3,559,028

Now, do these numbers reflect popularity or are they merely reflective of the sudden boom in usage of Facebook and other social networking sites for politics. In other words, is Obama using Facebook better than Bush did? or are more people using Facebook in general. Also, when will my computer stop telling me that Facebook is misspelled... that will really be a testament to its popularity.

Only time will tell and by 2012 when we have a new president we will see how large of a role Facebook plays in White House politics.

  1. I'm not sure these numbers reflect popularity or the sudden boom in usage of Facebook like you assume they do. Can't it simply be that Bush's followers tend to be an older crowd and may not have Facebook? Whereas Obama attracts a younger and more technologically savvy group.
In addition, I noticed you say that in 2012 we will have a new president... what makes you think Obama won't run again and get re-elected?

  2. I think that your possibility is certainly plausible. I had not thought of it, thank you.

In terms of my remark concerning the president in 2012, it was merely wishful thinking.

  3. This is so interesting-- never thought to look for them on facebook! It would be important to look at the age groups-- I wonder if age does play a roll- it seems like it would.

  4. Michelle Obama is pretty far behind, around 15 million followers behind. Also, I'm not sure how telling Facebook followers is of popularity. It's simply too difficult to gauge. I guess only time will tell.
